Great Lakes steelhead are big, hard fighting fish which can be targeted over 7 months of the year and can be found in most rivers that flow into the Great Lakes. Targeting these fish is generally best done by either nymphing with egg, worm or nymph patterns, or by swinging or stripping streamers. These are the flies that we won't leave the house without, make sure you have a few for your next outing!

Top 5 Steelhead Flies Box

If you're a seasoned angler or just getting started and you want to target these fantastic cold water silver bullets called the steelhead. The bite is just getting started so it's important to have these essential must have patterns with you.

Daphnia Fritz Egg

Steelhead gorge on salmon eggs in the fall season, and they will instinctively eat them any time they're given the chance. There are lots of great egg patterns but this is one that has really impressed us the last couple seasons, has a wonderful blend of translucency and sheen.

Squirmy Worm

Squirmy Worm

Is there anything this fly can't catch? Worms are dynamite for steelhead, especially in pink. The Squirmy is worth a go anytime you have stained water or in cold water.

Jig White Death

Jig White Death

The white death has it's share of fans in the Great Lakes, it's generally nymphed, but can be actively moved too. We started tying them on jigs a few seasons ago and couldn't not have them on this list now!

Kauffman Stonefly

Stoneflies are an important food source for steelhead through the winter months when there are less loose salmon eggs floating downriver. The Kauffman stone offers a big profile with lots of movement. Feel free to dead drift this fly while also twitching it in slow water!

Bruiser Steelhead Zonker

Few excitements in fly fishing rival an energetic steelhead smashing a streamer! This zonker can be swung across the current or stripped along. The black and blue colour works equally as well in clear water as it does dirty.
